About

From one teacher to another - do you always feel successful in supporting and accommodating the needs of your students? Most of us who just read that probably laughed, felt guilty, and then maybe a little bit confused.
As educators, we are constantly managing a thousand things at once. Much of what we do each day is breaking down barriers for students. helping them understand what they are learning. We wouldn't hand our students the teacher's guide to the math curriculum; we break down the lessons using verbiage they will understand and support them with the resources they need to grasp new concepts.
How do we support the needs of our students and help them to both develop a love for learning and find success in the things they have to do?
Here at Accessible Educating, my goal is to do just that - first, to make resources accessible to educators, and to then empower educators to make education more accessible for their students.
The term "accessible education" comes from my own experiences across the education system as both a learner and an educator. From teaching both general education and special education in a variety of inclusive and non-inclusive educational models, I have struggled to explain to other educators that what I do in any classroom setting remains pretty much the same.
Whether my classroom is full of neurodivergent disabled students or neurotypical, able-bodied ones, my goal as their teacher is still to make education accessible to them. So now when anyone asks what I teach, I say "accessible education!" and feel confident in the work I am doing as an educator who is also neurodivergent and disabled.
Whether you are here to get ideas, to learn new vocabulary, or just to see what accessible education is all about, I am glad you are here and look forward to the great impact you will have making education more accessible for your students too!
